Photo Contest Winners
Grand Prize Winner
Congratulations to Stephen Backer, who won our 1st Annual Green Building Photo Contest with a sweeping view of the green roof at Cook + Fox. He didn't have to travel far for inspiration. The green roof was the view he enjoyed while working at Terrapin Bright Green, an environmental strategies consulting firm. "If I'm going to live in New York City and spend every day inside an office, I can't imagine a better place to work," said Backer. His two years at the firm provided an invaluable foundation to the principles of green building and an opportunity to learn from "multi-disciplinary teams that include engineers, ecologists, material scientists, designers, bankers, developers, construction managers, and academics." "Working in green building allows me to combine my interest in architecture and urban planning with my concern for the environment," said Backer. |
Honorable Mention
Melissa Matlins, Marketing Director, BKSK Architects, spent the entire weekend at the Queens Botanical Garden when it opened and documented many of the events. She recalled, “At dusk, a parade down Main Street emptied into the Garden, and the building filled with people. It was the first time that I had seen the building at night. It was really rewarding to see the Center being used and understood as a teaching tool for sustainability.” |

Runner-Up
The simple beauty of Nicole De Feo's shot of an outdoor area at the Queens Botanical Garden caught the eye of our judges, who cited it as runner-up. A Capital Projects Assistant, Nicole captured this image when, she said, "the sun was already low in the sky, and the light on the terrace became very dramatic, casting long shadows from the café furniture. The geometric shadows from the furniture and columns contrasted nicely with the organic shapes thrown from the oak trees." |
